Capture the Power of Traditional Medicine: Join the Inaugural World Health Organization Global Summit

Since time immemorial, traditional and complementary medicine have been integral resources for family and community health, and their vast contributions to modern-day treatments, such as pain relievers, malaria cures, and childhood cancer treatments, are often overlooked. To change this, the World Health Organization (WHO) is joining forces with the Government of India to host the inaugural Global Traditional Medicine Summit from the 17th to 18th of August 2023 in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India.

This high-level event comes in tandem with the G20 health ministerial meeting and will offer a platform for all stakeholders, including traditional medicine workers, users and communities, national policy makers, and international organizations, to share best practices, new evidence and data, and transformative innovations related to traditional medicine. With the summit, WHO and the Government of India hope to ignite political commitment and tangible action that furthers the benefits of traditional medicine to public health and sustainable development.

The Centennial of Evidence: World Health Organization’s Global Centre for Traditional Medicine

In March 2022, in response to an increasingly globalized interest and demand for traditional medicine, WHO launched the Global Centre for Traditional Medicine as a knowledge hub to bridge ancient wisdom and modern innovation for the continued betterment of society and the planet. This extraordinary initiative boosts WHO’s current capacity regarding all things traditional medicine and books the divide between norms, governance, and country support across the Organization’s six regional Offices and Headquarters.

At the centerence of the Centre’s mission is partnership, evidence, data, biodiversity, and innovation. By providing invaluable partnership opportunities, undertaking research, and acting as a valuable resource on traditional medicine, the Centre helps to put traditional medicine at the forefront of the global health mission and ensure its safe, cost-effective and equitable use.

Stay Tuned: Information and Updates Ahead of the Summit

In order to be fully prepared for the Summit, a cross-regional expert panel has been convened to come up with a clear middle ground between the various issues, themes, topics, and formats to be addressed. Now, it’s up to all relevant stakeholders to stay involved and up to date with all progress until the Summit.
